This was a clusterfuck of massive proportions.

After meeting with the ex, Quinn had called Darcy to let her know what was happening, but he hadn’t been able to actually speak with her. Instead, he got the run around from her assistant who sounded shady as hell about why she wouldn’t take his call.

It didn’t take a math genius to put two and two together and come up with what was happening. Darcy was upset about the kiss last night. She’d acted like she’d accepted his apology, but clearly she was uncomfortable with it.

He’d fucked up badly.

To save her any further embarrassment, he should probably resign from the case and have another investigator appointed. He wanted to be sensitive to her feelings and seeing him day in and day out in her own home clearly wasn’t going to work. He’d have to tell Logan that he’d screwed up. Hopefully, they wouldn’t fire him, although he wouldn’t blame them if they did. Hell, he’d probably fire his ass if he was in Logan’s position.

You don’t go around kissing your clients. Period.

He’d been fooling himself this morning that everything would be fine. It wasn’t fine and he was an idiot if he thought it was. Moving in with Darcy had sounded like it wouldn’t be a big deal, but he’d been wrong. His attraction to her was stronger than he’d initially estimated. Add in the nightmares and it had been a recipe for disaster. He was sorry that he wasn’t going to see this through with her, and even more that he wouldn’t be able to be there to protect her.

He’d go to the office and see her, give his mea culpa, apologize again, and then throw himself on the mercy of Logan and Reed. Maybe…he’d still be employed at the end of the day.

Or he’d be heading down to the Keys to open that bait shop like he kept threatening to do.

“Hey, Sara. I’d really like to talk to Darcy if she has time.”

The older woman looked up from the laptop where she was typing and smiled.

“I can go see if she has time. Her schedule is pretty clear today. She wanted to concentrate on paperwork.”

Greg, who had been assigned to watch over Darcy when Quinn wasn’t around, was sitting by her door with a paperback. When Sara disappeared inside of Darcy’s office, Greg waved Quinn over.

“You need to know something before you go in there.”

Quinn already knew that he was persona non grata, but how did Greg know? Darcy wouldn’t tell him? Would she? It wasn’t in her personality but then he didn’t know her well.

“What do I need to know?”

“I was sitting here when two people showed up. They looked like vagrants, maybe homeless. It was her parents. I heard Sara talking to Darcy. I don’t know what happened, but Darcy told Sara she didn’t want to be disturbed for awhile after they left.”

Wait. This entire situation might have nothing to do with him. Or the kiss.

Her parents had been
